I'm just the cumin in this journalistic stew

Don't try to wake me in the morning: 36 (mostly excellent) songs to soundtrack your own suicideThe A.V. Club, 8/31/09
What do Hüsker Dü, Blink-182, and Sleater-Kinney have in common?

"Now I'm bored and old": 27 deliberately confounding follow-ups to popular successesThe A.V. Club, 8/17/09
Even though I'm hardly a big Weezer fan, I ended up writing about Pinkerton for this list. No one else wanted it.

Souls for sale: 20+ fictional ad or PR professionals in need of redemptionThe A.V. Club, 8/10/09
Finally, seeing Nothing In Common on HBO a hundred times when I was a kid pays off.

A.V. Talk: Funny People • The A.V. Club, 7/31/09
Judd Apatow's latest is an enjoyable trainwreck of two to three movies mixed into one. Tasha Robinson, Nathan Rabin, Scott Tobias and I discuss.

You rarely get a second chance to make a first impression: 23 pop songs that lived twice (or more)The A.V. Club, 7/27/09
I write about The Righteous Brother's "Unchained Melody" and Gary Glitter's "Rock 'N' Roll Pt. 2."

A.V. Talk: Brüno • The A.V. Club, 7/10/09
Nathan, Tasha & I talk about Sacha Baron Cohen's latest cringefest.

The Criterion Collection of junk food: 19 snacks & sodas we wish were still on the marketThe A.V. Club, 7/6/09
Bring back Peanut Butter Boppers!

I love you, Scumbag X: 12 things Woody Allen just doesn't getThe A.V. Club, 6/29/09
If Annie Hall is any indication, Woody Allen doesn't need to be behind the wheel.

"Welcome to the altered state of Druggachusettes!" 25 notably trippy kids' showsThe A.V. Club, 6/1/09
At last, watching Baby Einstein with my nephew and nieces comes in handy.

Caught in my shadow: 21 unjustly unheralded sidemenThe A.V. Club, 5/29/09
Following the unexpected death of Jay Bennett, I organized this bonus Inventory that paid tribute to him and others like him.

All Candy Expo 2009: Back to the candy storeThe A.V. Club, 5/22/09
A Simpsons reference comes back to life, as a few of us head down to the annual convention of candy-makers to check out what's new (and stuff ourselves). Where else would you encounter a product that's like a nicotine inhaler for chocolate?

Who gets custody of inspiration? 14 memorable entertainments inspired by real-life divorcesThe A.V. Club, 5/11/09
I write about Cursive's Domestica in an Inventory for the second time this year.

No Oscars for fat suits: 23 people who immediately followed Academy Award nominations or wins with terrible filmsThe A.V. Club, 4/27/09
The inspiration for this Inventory came from Along Came Polly, of all things: Philip Seymour Hoffman plays the brutish best friend of Ben Stiller, and there's this one funny scene at a gallery where Hoffman frantically tells Stiller they have to leave IMMEDIATELY. Why? "I just sharted," he says. Turns out he needed to fart, but some poo came out with it. Hoffman's next role? As the titular character in Capote, for which he won an Oscar. As much as I loved the idea of having "I just sharted" be the title, I relented when we changed the rules for this in our production meeting: Only films made right after an Oscar win/nom were eligible, not films made right before. Dammit! Great title wasted.

"Have you checked the children?": 22 awful fictional babysittersThe A.V. Club, 4/20/09
What would I talk about if The Simpsons didn't exist? In this instance, I wouldn't have written about The Babysitter Bandit. Also: Sally & I would have no sort of shared language were it not for the show.

Turn off the shuffle: 25 great albums that work best when listened to from start to finishThe A.V. Club, 3/30/09
Finally, Zen Arcade gets its due. And oddly, this is the second Inventory in the space of a few weeks for which I've written about Cursive's Domestica.

In a way, they're all winners: 10 Simpsons episodes from the past 5 seasons that stand among the series' bestThe A.V. Club, 3/23/09
I have little patience for people who haven't watched The Simpsons regularly in the past 10 years saying the show isn't good anymore. Sure, it isn't at the level it was during the Golden Age of the early and mid-'90s, but it still produces gems. Genevieve Koski, Steve Heisler, and I pick 10 episodes from the past five seasons that stand among the best of the Golden Age. It's a provocative assertion to make in front of the testy commenters on avclub.com, but we're right.

And playing the part of the corpse...: 22 crucial film cadavers (no zombies allowed)The A.V. Club, 2/23/09
I knew seeing Weekend At Bernie's 2 in the theater would come in handy some day.
